| Great Viola for the $$$ | 2010-08-26 | 5 / 5 |
| | After renting a viola for 4 years (!!), with my daughter having 5 years left of primary school where I knew she would be playing, I had the ingenious idea to finally buy a viola! I really had no idea how much it would cost so I hopped on and this one is PERFECT. The price was right, it looks great (viola, case, bow - - everything), my daughter is happy and now I dont have to pay $75 bucks every 3 months for a rental!!! It also came very fast! Great product, would definitely recommend! |
| Decent for the price as a beginner's instrument | 2009-09-01 | 4 / 5 |
| I purchased this viola in February 2009. Now, I've been playing this instrument daily for 7 months, had been taking lessons from the beginning, and visited and talked to several violin makers - I am still a beginner but now I can write a review about this instrument after the mentioned experience.
This is a very CHEAP viola and so is everything that comes with it. However, if you want to give a try to a string instrument and don't want to spend much money - this is probably a good choice. Renting an instrument for a short time will most likely cost you as much as this viola.
If you wanted to build a viola, the wood would probably cost around as much as this whole thing.
The viola itself is "ok". The strings, bridge, pegs, and rosin are very bad. You may use it as it comes for a short time, but you'll want to change those things if you decide to keep playing this instrument. I changed this viola part by part and can tell what difference it was after every step.
Good strings, good bridge, pegs adjustment, and a decent rosin will make it sound actually quite good for such a cheap instrument - even if you sum all those investments together. My relative who plays a master chello professionaly was impressed by the sound of my viola relative to it's price (after all the adjustments).
You'll probably also want to get a shoulder rest.
The bow also looks very cheap and is very light. But it won't affect the sound by it's bad quality as much as the rest of what you'll get. You'll want to get a new one anyway.
The viola doesn't look esthetically that good. The varnish is and looks cheap and you'll see a lot of detailed imperfections by a closer look but these won't affect the sound.
The case is ok.
The whistle tuner does the job but is unreliable in my opinion as the pitches change according to how strong you're blowing in it.
I personally am very happy that I purchased this viola. I really love it. But it needs quite a bit of work. I enjoyed taking it apart and working on it. I think it'll be good for me for at least for the next year or two until I decide to buy a good viola for a completely different price. Not through the internet.
If you know you'll be playing viola more seriously for a longer time - you may want to invest a bit more money in this purchase.
All in all, this is a decent buy for the cheap price. But cheap is also what you're going to get.
I give 4 stars as I won't give 5 for a low quality instrument.

| I am a violinist, interested in fiddling around on a viola, I made the mistake of picking Crystalcello.
Item arrived soundly in its case, everything was as it should be, apart from the bow. The bow hairs were tangled in the locking mechanism that holds the stick in the case. I mean, TANGLED, I was forced to cut a few hairs off in the end just to finally release it.
On that note, the bow does NOT SOUND. Whatsoever, it does not create sound, no matter how much rosin is applied. My violin bow did create sound, however.
The sound, when bowed with ANOTHER BOW YOU MUST ACQUIRE, is not so bad.
Marvel at the mass-produced craftsmanship: the smudgy, plastic appearance of the entire body and scroll. The bridge, which is given to you without any precut slits in the wood to help you align the strings correctly. The rattling of paintchips inside of the soundbox.. oh this is such a beauty. |
| Excellent, especially for the price | 2009-02-27 | 5 / 5 |
| For the price, you really can't beat this viola. I purchased this to see if playing a bowed instrument would suit me, and it was absolutely the best thing I could have done. After only having played it for a day, I am sure that not only will I continue to play but that this instrument will last me long enough until the day comes when I feel like spending more on a more professional instrument.
The bow is straight and plays both the viola and violin nicely.
The case is sturdy enough to be protective and has enough features to be useful. There is room for two bows and accessories. There is also a pocket for sheet music.
The viola itself is very nice looking. It has a beautiful glossy finish, and although there are some minor imperfections with the finish on mine, they are only noticeable upon close inspection. Again, for the money, you can't beat it.
The fine tuners work well and the tuning pegs keep the instrument in tune. First time players should keep in mind that strings will stretch until broken in, so the viola will go out of tune until this happens. Usually the strings will set after about 5-6 tunings.
The sound produced is very nice. A violinist friend of mine scratched out a few notes and said "Wow, that's loud!". He also couldn't believe the price I paid for this.
If you are looking to whet your appetite for a reasonable price, this is the viola for you. |

| | My husband got this viola for me as a Christmas gift. It is a wonderful viola. The sound viola is great. It comes with everything you need, including the rosin too. I am really impressed. Also my husband said that the service was really fast too. He got the viola in two weeks after he ordered. |
