Cello Playing for Music Lovers provides beginners and intermediate students with an authoritative, step-by-step guide to learning to play the cello. Gifted cellist Erik Friedlander plays the 116 musical figures discussed in the book on the accompanying play along CD. The book includes musical examples from folk, Broadway and classical traditions. It illustrates correct playing positions with twenty photos. Written from the student's viewpoint, it teaches all the required skills, including reading music, using the bow effectively, analyzing musical structures, improvising, and playing by ear. The book starts from scratch with songs transcribed for beginners and includes 4th, 2nd and 3rd positions. Included are folk songs, hymns, Broadway standards like Some Enchanted Evening, and classical selections like a Bach Prelude and Sarabande. Later sections explore some music theory and how to play in chamber music groups. The author, a Ph.D. and experienced teacher, presents this fascinating material in small, logical steps. As cellist Aaron Minsky said, Your idea that the cello can be enjoyed on a simple level even within a few weeks of study is very true. . . This book will bring the joys of cello playing to many people who would not have believed it possible. This book is divided into four parts. Part One helps you to acquire a cello and teacher (if circumstances permit), a musical vocabulary and other essentials. The book progresses step by step, dealing with notes, fingerings and bowings, scales and chords. It includes excerpts and selections from over sixty songs, some simplified for ease of playing. Parts Two and Three explain both how to read music and how to play songs you like on the cello by ear. It introduces the reader to musical structure and theory. Part Two stays entirely in first position. Part Three introduces extensions, minor scales, arpeggios and accidentals. Part Four explains more music theory and cello positions 4, 2 and 3. It details the essentials for success when exploring chamber music with other amateurs. Depending on your previous experience and background, the book is arranged so that you can skip around in it, focusing on chapters that are of interest to you, although it is better to go in order. Playing the cello will give any music lover unparalleled satisfaction. If you always wished you could do it in your next life, do it now.

Good book, but not for everybody2010-07-203 / 5
    Beware of enthusiastic comments.

When I bought the book I expected that some of the comments would be overrated. My fears where a gentle underestimation. After reading a few chapters, I felt that I was "hungry". There was not enough advice inside.

In particular, bowing advice is not sufficient. My professor gave me basic bowing advices even in my third lesson, which do not appear in the book.

This IS NOT a book for experienced musicians. Musicians with experience and a good musical background will find it very slow and plenty of already known information. Try this: take out all music theory paragraphs and keep only the cello pertinent ones. You will find that an important part of the book goes away.

This IS a book for beginners with nothing else than a cello, enthousiasm and some time. They will find it rewarding, useful and instructive.

That's why I say, a good book, but not for everybody.

For me, it was an purchase error, mainly due to overenthousiastic comments.
It is a very expensive book for what I could learn.

    Greetings

PS: Please note that if you don't live in the US, you will not know several songs.

Perfectly packed with information for the beginner!2010-06-225 / 5
I began the adventure of learning to play cello at the age of 30. But i quickly found out how expensive lessons were costing me. I found that what was slowing me down (and what was wasting my money) was not knowing the basics. This book gave me the basics of learning how to read notes as well as proper technique with playing the cello. It allowed me to learn 2 month's worth of lesson for the cost of one. By learning what I did in this book, I can now hire a cello instructor with confidence knowing i'm not wasting my money having my instructor spend precious cello time going over basic music theory and cello technique. Now my instructor focuses on other things, like what piece of music to play next!

In general I think the book is very good. Much thought has been put into its arrangement so the student progresses by building on the previous pages. That's what a good instructional book does. Some of the written instruction is vague, and it is because I have had instruction in the past that I understood these parts of the text. The CD might be easier to work with if the indexing were different. As for the music, it's brief. Additional books will be necessary. This book will get you going though, and fairly quickly.
    Makes a good companion book.2010-05-144 / 5
You still need a teacher, unless you've played a string instrument before. This makes a nice supplement, though.

Love the book. Simple instruction but allows for a faster pace than the Suzuki method. My cello teacher doesn't like it and prefers to use the Art of Cello by Louis Potter, Jr. As a result, I am using both...Potter for my instructor and Jiji for the extra bits (like music other than Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star). I started practice three months ago and am finding that I really look forward to the practice.
